What is a Roth IRA?

Unlike a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA is funded with money you have already paid taxes on. That means no taxes on growth, no taxes on withdrawals in retirement, and no required minimum distributions during your lifetime. It is a retirement account built entirely in your favor.

Who Qualifies for a Roth IRA?

Earned Income Requirement

You must have earned income from wages, self-employment, or similar sources. Passive income such as rental income or dividends does not count toward eligibility.

Income Limits

For 2026, single filers earning under $153,000 can contribute the full amount. Contributions phase out between $153,000 and $168,000. Married filers phase out between $242,000 and $252,000.

Age Flexibility

There is no age limit to open or contribute to a Roth IRA as long as you have earned income. Even minors with earned income can open a custodial Roth IRA.

Key Benefits of a Roth IRA

Tax-Free Growth

Every dollar your investments earn inside a Roth IRA compounds without being taxed, maximizing what you actually keep by retirement.

Tax-Free Withdrawals

Qualified distributions are completely tax-free provided you are at least 59½ and have held the account for a minimum of five years. Once both conditions are met, you keep everything you have built without a tax bill.

No Required Minimum Distributions

Unlike traditional IRAs, you are never forced to withdraw from a Roth IRA during your lifetime, making it an excellent wealth transfer tool.

Contribution Flexibility

You can withdraw your contributions (not earnings) at any time without penalty, giving you a layer of flexibility most retirement accounts do not offer.

Roth IRA vs. Traditional IRA

The core difference comes down to when you pay taxes. A Roth IRA uses after-tax contributions so your withdrawals in retirement are completely tax-free. A traditional IRA uses pre-tax contributions, reducing your taxable income now but requiring you to pay ordinary income tax when you withdraw. Traditional IRAs also require minimum distributions starting at age 73, while a Roth IRA never forces you to take money out. For those expecting to be in a higher tax bracket in retirement, a Roth IRA is typically the stronger long-term choice.
